Middleborough was previously called Middlebury, which was the name of a place in England. Recently, the name was changed to Middleborough. During the war at the time of King Philip's reign, the entire population of Middleborough took shelter in a fort near the Nemasket River. Later on, the populace withdrew to Plymouth colony. In their absence, the entire village was burned to the ground and it took several years before it was populated again.
